'Franny and Zooey' by J.D. Salinger

I like this book a lot.

It is saturated with dialogue which gives one the impression that it is a play; a theatre; the characters as merely actors (and they are).

The ending, I think, gives a spin to the ever-quotable 'all the world's a stage...' of Shakespeare with a religious counter-argument. All the world is a stage but that stage is God's stage and no matter how much you hate the incompetence of the other actors or the dullness of the audience, they are God's and in appreciating them you appreciate God.

Seymour (via Zooey) even says that he should sing to the fat lady for the fat lady is Christ.

  1. Is this the one that took two days to read? :P

Why don't you read more plays? You liked this one, or is it something else about it that made it better than other books?

  2. nah, it took me about 2-3 hours to read (3 bus rides :P). It's not a play, it's a book but you have a point. I should read more plays.
