According to Wikipedia this is Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. The term 'masochism' is derived from his name.
However, although Venus in Furs may sound seedy based on this background information, it's not porn and don't expect it to be so. It is more an artist's exploration of his fetishes. Admittedly, what attracted me to read this book is its cover. I recognised the artwork as a Gustav Klimt's (who happened to be one of my favourites):
